A round-up of club sports in the past week.
Colorado men’s hockey had three games in three days. The team got off to a hot start against Arizona with a 6-4 win. Goaltender Matt Lechner got the win, recording 26 saves on 30 shots for the day. The Buffs, down by three goals after the first period, rallied back with four goals in the second period. They then added two more in the third. Colorado came out firing in the third period and ended up tallying 27 total shots on goal, with goals from forwards Matt Anders, George Gruber, John Nitchen, Pierce Maty, Elliot Polanchyck and defenseman Hurley Kane. Jake Bauer had two assists in the win.
Next up came the top ranked Sun Devils of Arizona State. Colorado kept it close in a 4-2 loss, but was only able to get 17 shots on goal compared to ASU’s 32. Mick Bruce and Jake Bauer notched one goal apiece, with John Dora and Matt Anders recording assists. Alex Palumbo stopped 28 shots in the loss.
Saturday, Colorado played ASU for the second straight day with the same result. A 6-1 loss came with a relentless attack and a hat trick by Arizona State’s David Norris. Goaltender Alex Palumbo had 41 saves in the game, but could only do so much against ASU’s seemingly constant attack. The lone highlight came by way of an unassisted goal by forward Thomas Jarman.
Colorado (12-14-2) will play at Colorado State on Thursday. The Buffs hold a 2-1 season record against Colorado State and look to get back on track in Fort Collins.
