UMC hosts breast cancer awareness event

In light of breast cancer awareness month, CU hosted a rally on Wednesday to jumpstart the month. Various companies located in Boulder and hosted by CU's Student Wellness Program sponsored the event in the UMC. It included an informational session about mammograms by Boulder Community Hospital, painting plates in memory of breast cancer victims and readings about breast cancer from the Student Wellness Program information table.

Foundation helps struggling dreamers

Gabe Granillo, a freshman open-option major, strides along campus carrying an attitude he gained from a program that motivated him to do whatever it takes to get to college. Granillo is an illustration of an attitude that Eugene Lang hoped to instill among high school students in low-income areas when he founded a program that he named after Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech.

COURAGE panelists: Sex workers victims, not criminals

Panelists spoke Thursday encouraging students to have pity on sex workers and see them as victims rather than criminals. Hosted by CU's COURAGE program, Judith Lopez, coordinator of Denver's Chrysalis program, and Joni Handran, a social worker with the Empowerment Program, told stories about their experiences with prostitutes and helping them off the streets.

Drinking violations on the Hill fewer than last year

Alcohol-related incidents on the Hill have decreased since this time last year, according to statistics from the Boulder Police Department. Overall, summons for minor in possessions (MIP) have declined, along with other violations associated with drinking, such as noise, nuisance and party issues, said Julie Brooks, Boulder police public information officer.
