A career-best performance by senior guard Jasmine Sborov wasn’t enough to lift the University of Colorado women’s basketball team past the No. 22 Iowa Hawkeyes in Iowa City on Sunday afternoon, when the Hawkeyes beat the Buffaloes 78-63 in the Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
Sborov’s second career double-double saw her set new career highs in points and rebounds, with 17 and 12 respectively. By halftime, Sborov had already amassed an impressive 10 points and eight rebounds. Her first double-double came last December against Southern Utah, when she totaled 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Despite the senior’s strong performance, Colorado trailed Iowa for most of the game. After trading leads early in the first half, Iowa began to pull away in the half’s final minutes, and Colorado went into halftime trailing 35-28. The Hawkeyes stretched their lead to ten points in the first minute of the second half, and while Colorado stayed close for most of the half, the Buffaloes couldn’t close the gap and trailed for the remainder of the game.
Tied with Sborov for the team lead in rebounds was junior forward Jamee Swan, who had 12 rebounds and eight points. In Colorado’s previous game, a 97-89 overtime win over San Jose State, Swan scored a career-high 26 points.
Colorado takes their second loss of the season, the first coming in overtime against Western Kentucky in the second round of the Preseason WNIT in Boulder on November 17. The Buffaloes continue the out-of-state portion of their nonconference schedule this Friday when they travel to Missouri to play the University of Missouri at 6 p.m.
