The Pac-12 problems of the No. 21 University of Colorado women’s basketball team continued on Sunday night as they fell to the University of Washington at the Alaska Airlines Arena in Seattle, 81-71.
Sophomore forward Arielle Roberson led the Buffaloes (11-6, 1-5), contributing 20 points, four rebounds and two steals. Junior forward Jen Reese and senior guard Brittany Wilson were right behind her, scoring 13 and 16 points respectively.
On the other side of the ball, two Huskies did the Buffs in. Freshman guard Kelsey Plum scored 35 points alone, followed by junior guard Jazmine Davis who dropped an additional 20 points. Eighteen out of Plum’s total 35 points came from made free throws, a CU opponent record.
The game started out neck-and-neck, as both teams tied the score at nine points, only four minutes into the game. After that, the Buffs got their first lead of the game with a two-point shot by Roberson, but the lead was short-lived.
Soon after, the Huskies took over. They managed to keep an edge over the Buffs for the remainder of the first half, going up by as much as 12 points two separate times. Heading into the break, the score read 39-27 with the Huskies on top.
The Buffs came back with a fury in the second half. They completely erased the 12-point deficit and even got back in front at 54-53 with 8:42 still on the clock. But just like the team’s first lead of the game, this one didn’t last long.
It only took the Huskies another 57 seconds to regain the lead and keep it for the rest of the game. From there on out, the Huskies outscored the Buffs 24 to 17 and finally ran away with the victory, 81-71.
The Buffs continue conference play against the University of Arizona Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 24 at the Coors Events Center.
