Following a CU student’s admission that an Aug. 31 robbery near the Regent Administrative Center was fabricated, CUPD now believes that no crime occurred.
According to a CUPD news release, Cullen Hart, 18, “was issued a summons for False Reporting to Authorities, a Class 3 misdemeanor” Thursday.
Hart originally told police that he was robbed at knifepoint by two men and suffered a cut on his arm in the early hours of Aug. 31. He did not report the incident to the police until 15 hours after, around 6:30 p.m., the release said.
Because of the initial report, a campus-wide security alert was sent out via email and text message regarding the reported robbery as required by the Jeanne Clery Disclosure of Campus Security Policy and Campus Crime Statistics Act.
Hart’s admission came following CUPD discovering inconsistencies in the story given to them. According to the news release, “Detectives obtained surveillance video that showed Hart entering his residence hall around the time of the purported incident.” Hart then changed his story, admitting to detectives “that he was not injured by any suspects, but rather received a cut on his arm from the desk in his room.”
Hart also told CUPD that “he did not get one of the suspects in a choke-hold as he originally reported.”
