In honor of Valentines day, the CU Independent sports staff takes a look at who they think are the cutest professional-athlete couples.
Sports Co-Editor Jillian Arja – Misty May-Treanor and Matt Treanor
You don’t get a much cuter sports couple than Olympic volleyball player Misty May-Treanor and Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Matt Treanor. They are truly the epiphany of love at first sight. They were engaged for just two months and now have been married for 8 years. Both of them are avid supporters for each other’s games and are known for giving shout-outs to each other for good luck and support. How cute!
Sports Co-Editor Scott Annis – Caroline Wozniacki and Rory McIlroy
The top sports couple right now has to be Danish tennis phenomenon Caroline Wozniacki and Northern Irish golfer Rory McIlroy. They are both in the top ten national rankings of their sports and newly engaged. They are seen together around the world following each other’s games, most recently seen together in Australia as Wozniacki got her 2013 season off to a hot start at the Australian Open. They have reportedly purchased an $8.9 million house together in Florida and will likely will continue to be at the top of their game and the “hot couple” list in sports for years to come.
Senior Reporter Jessica Malknecht – Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra
Mia Hamm and Nomar Garciaparra are the ultimate athletic couple. Hamm is considered to be one of the best best female soccer player ever. She holds the record – male or female – for most international goals, 158. She was named Fédération Internationale de Football Association’s Female Player of the Year twice in a row in 2001-02. Garciaparra played 14 years of Major League Baseball, mostly with the Red Sox and is a six-time All-Star as shortstop. He received a World Series ring for his part in Boston’s 2004 championship season.
Reporter Grayson O’Roark – Brooklyn Decker and Andy Roddick
Roddick tennis matches were always worth watching. His 1,000-mph serve impressed almost as much as his lovely wife, model Brooklyn Decker, who got nearly as much camera time as the match. Roddick’s once-held title as the number one player in the world is definitely rivaled by marrying Decker in terms of his biggest lifetime accomplishments. It was no surprise when Roddick opted to retire early to spend more time with Decker in 2012. Happy Valentine’s Day.
