Soccer wins fifth straight, beats Cougars 1-0

The University of Colorado women’s soccer team beat the Washington State Cougars 1-0 Friday night in Pullman.

The game was a major stalemate. Neither team was able to find the net until and, like a lot of Buffs games this year, almost went past regulation. But, in the 89th minute, freshman midfielder Taylor Kornieck scored the game’s lone goal. She was assisted on the goal by sophomore midfielder Sarah Kinzner.

The Cougars were unable to reciprocate and the Buffs won their Pac-12 opener, improving to 7-3 on the year. The win was Colorado’s fifth straight.

It’s not that the Cougars didn’t try. Washington State outshot the Buffs 23-8 during the contest, an uncommon occurrence this season. Colorado has averaged 18.6 shots on net per game and has allowed just 54 total shots on goal to enemy squads.

The Buffaloes have outscored opponents 14-2 during their recent hot streak.

At the 48:32 mark, Kornieck headed a rocket of a shot to the Washington State net. It bounced off the crossbar, and Kornieck was denied a great scoring chance.

Senior forward Danica Evans led Colorado with four shots. Kornieck had three. The other Buff with a lone shot was senior midfielder Kahlia Hogg.

The Buffs have looked solid in all aspects of the game so far in 2016. They are outscoring opponents by a 20-8 margin. Colorado is averaging exactly two goals per game, compared to the opposition’s 0.80.

Up next for the Buffs is more Pac-12 Conference play. Coolorado will look to extend their streak to six games when the team takes on the Arizona Wildcats in Tucson this Thursday, Sept. 29 at 8 p.m. MST.
