I refuse to believe summer is over. Sure, school may have started but it’s still syllabus week and it’s warm enough to hike the Flatties topless and hit the Buff Pool. So here’s your playlist to reflect that.
Hi, I’m Jake Shapiro from Radio 1190, and this is my weekly playlist curated for you, the CU Student that actually still reads. (Good on you!)
Why I picked what I picked and why you should care:
1) Closer – The Chainsmokers: The number one banger of the summer includes a huge shoutout to the city we all go to school in. How could I not double down? I made it the top song and the name of the playlist.
2) No Cities To Love – Sleater-Kinney: Just a reminder, even if we are “back in Boulder,” and even if we love it, Sleater-Kinney reminders us, “there are no cities to love… it’s the people we love.” Aside, this song has a very summery vibe to it still.
3) Drinking in L.A. – Bran Van 3000: Possibly the best summer song of all time, NEXT!
4-6) School Spirit Skit(s) – Kanye West and Summer Friends – Chance the Rapper: Ahhh, the stark reminder that school is here. Why are we in college? Kanye explains. Then Chance helps you look back at the summer time, that, “don’t get no shine no more,” because “our summer time don’t got no time no more.”
Finally, Kanye hits you with the truth again, it’s school season.
7) Heard ‘Em Say – Kanye West: To bring it back to the banngers, I have Mr. West waking up and spitting about the harsh realities encroaching.
8) Kids Don’t Follow – The Replacements: With the dread of school upon us, it also brings the craziness of syllabus week. Don’t let the cops bust up your party, party all night, Wayne, Garth, etc.
9) Punching In A Dream – The Naked And Famous: “Like punching in a dream and breathing life into my nightmare,” sounds accurate of my feelings to this whole school situation.
10) Normal Person – Arcade Fire: It’s easy to get lost in the 20,000 or whatever students that go to CU. But just remember there are no normal people and that overarching “they” is just an illusion, we’re all individuals here for a purpose. Don’t let “they” break you down.
11-12) Always N Forever – The Orwells & Younger Us – The Japandroids: When you’re asked this week, “what did you do this summer?” Hopefully, your response will be in the vein of this song.
Teenage anxiety will always live in us somewhere.
13) Another Brick In The Wall – Pink Floyd: Live it. Breathe it. Be it.
14) One Way Out – The Allman Brothers Band: Play this while walking from one class to another. You’re welcome. (P.S. it’s better while on wheels.)
15) Gotta Get Away – The Black Keys: Don’t forget your summer vacation. Hopefully, you visited all of the places Dan Auerbach hollers about. And while you’re stuck looking out that classroom window, just play this song and remember that road trip you have planned to Moab for Spring Break.
