After an extensive search, the College of Media, Communication and Information finally has its first dean, Lori Bergen.
Bergen currently acts as dean of the J. William and Mary Diederich College of Communication at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and will begin her duties at CU on July 20th of this year.
“I’ve always been passionate about education and communication in so many different forms. The exciting things that come out of a creative act—that happens so much in communication,” she said.
Her passion for communication shows in her excellent credentials. Bergen is president-elect of the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication, serves on the National Advisory Board of the Poynter Institute and is a member of the Arthur W. Page Society.
Through her position as dean, Bergen hopes to enhance the student experience and supporting the faculty. She emphasized her desire to incorporate every member in CMCI in order to establish a plan that serves every student, faculty member, and alumni who is a part of the college.
“I want to spend time getting to know my colleagues, the students, and alumni. It would be our plan as a leadership team,” she said.
Bergen participates in projects that focus on improving student learning in ways that will better prepare those interested in journalism. She had a heavy hand in innovative academic initiatives such as the O’Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism and the Milwaukee Neighborhood News Service.
