A new crosswalk system has been initiated at the Regent Drive, an intersection that is regularly in high demand.
According to a university email, on April 26, Boulder will start operating the “high-intensity activated crosswalk” or “HAWK” system at the crosswalk that connects Regent Autopark and the Engineering Center.
This new system will flash yellow lights to indicate to drivers that a pedestrian is planning to use the crosswalk. The light will then change to solid yellow, then solid red, which will tell the driver to come to a stop at the crosswalk.
The system will be activated for about 90 seconds, allowing pedestrians to cross safely.
According to the email, the decision to implement this new system came from the high usage of this particular crosswalk. Throughout the day, 527 pedestrians, 57 bikers, and 950 vehicles use the intersection.
Both CU and the City of Boulder will be monitoring the signal over the course of the next year and will have station crossing guards for a period of time to help both pedestrians, bikers and vehicles adjust to the change.
