Boulder Police issued summons to a pair of Colorado Buffaloes football players after a physical altercation early Friday morning at a fraternity party.
Police issued sophomore quarterback Tyler Hansen, 19, a physical harassment summons and redshirt freshman safety Vince Ewing, 19, with assault in the third degree, records show.
When contacted by a reporter Wednesday, Hansen had little to say.
“We were at a party,” Hansen said. “And there was an incident with me and a buddy.”
Hansen said he has violated a couple of team rules before but none related to this incident. He declined to clarify that statement.
Ewing declined to comment but said he would call the reporter back. So far, he hasn’t.
Head coach Dan Hawkins could not be reached for comment on Wednesday as the team is in Morgantown, W.Va. for Thursday night’s game against the West Virginia Mountaineers.
However, CU Sports Information Director Dave Plati said Hawkins received word of the incident sometime Friday morning and has suspended Ewing indefinitely because his charge was more serious than Hansen’s. Furthermore, Ewing did not travel with the team. Ewing has seen the majority of his time on special teams this season.
Hansen is with the team but Plati said Hansen probably won’t see the field in an effort to preserve his redshirt. Nonetheless, Plati said both players will be punished.
“The process isn’t over,” Plati said. “They will face judicial affairs and further program actions.”
According to the police report, Boulder police received a phone call at 1:31 a.m. Friday and were dispatched to the Kappa Sigma Fraternity located at 1100 Pennsylvania Ave.
The victim, Jesse Kornblum, a 21-year-old senior geography major, and witness Christopher Marshall, a 19-year-old freshman history major, were physically escorting Ewing out of the party because he attempted to strike an unknown person.
They were pushing Ewing from behind when Ewing turned and pushed Kornblum, who was hired as part of the security staff, back inside the house. Then Ewing struck Kornblum in the jaw with a closed right fist.
Hansen, who was leaving the party, saw Kornblum force Ewing out. Hansen returned to the scene and pushed Kornblum in an attempt to get him off Ewing. When both football players left, Kornblum called the police.
Shortly after police arrived, Kornblum identified Hansen as Hansen walked along 12th Street. Police called Hansen over and Hansen was apologetic and cooperative. He was issued the summons and was released.
As for Ewing, Hansen called his teammate twice in an attempt to get Ewing to turn himself in. Ewing refused to cooperate and both times, Hansen gave his cell phone to police. Ewing hung up before police could say a word.
Ewing was later spotted by an officer and denied guilt. Ewing was taken into custody and transported to the Hill Annex by police. He was issued his summons and then released.
In the report, Kornblum stated he will be pressing charges. Neither he nor Marshall could be reached for comment.
The Boulder District Attorney’s office said Wednesday no court dates have been set at this time.
The CU Independent will be updating the story as more information becomes available.

Finally some action with our football team!
That party was f**king RAGEing, Swig knows how to throw parties.
Also, un-redshirt Hanson, we need a decent QB this season.
What did Tyler Hansen do wrong besides associate with Vince Ewing who showed poor judgment? Sounds like Tyler tried everything he could to rectify the situation and behaved like a good citizen. Vince, on the other hand, according to this account, seems to be the one at fault.
Great reporting. Looks like ya’ll beat the DC pretty bad on this story.
Dam dudes need to stop snitching because they get knocked out! Take your loss… You shouldn’t be kicking the football team out of your party, especially a safety, now that is poor judgement
Kornblum’s pressing charges, come on. It’s a little pushing match with a couple punches thrown. Be a man and drop the charges. What’s this world coming to. Back in the day the cops would break it up and tell them each to go sleep it off.
Really…? Kornblum couldn’t resolve this without the police? And he is pressing charges??? yikes, don’t bump into this guy on a crowded sidewalk.
