A press conference was held at the Boulder County Jail Monday afternoon after a court hearing for CU students Thomas Cunningham and Mary Essa, who were arrested over the weekend for giving pot brownies to their unsuspecting classmates and professor on Friday.
Cunningham and Essa are facing multiple felony charges and remain in police custody. Cunningham’s mother was escorted through a back exit after the hearing, while Essa’s lawyer had no comment.
History department chair Susan Kent and CU Police Department spokesperson Ryan Huff addressed the media immediately after the hearing. Kent spoke on behalf of assistant professor Celine Dauverd, who teaches the class Cunningham and Essa are in and went to the hospital after taking a bite of one of the brownies.
In addition to criminal charges, Cunningham and Essa are facing university disciplinary actions from the Office of Student Conduct, Huff said after the press conference.
