Larry Levan was the house DJ of the legendary Paradise Garage, a mainstay of the thriving queer counterculture of New York City in the 1970s and 80s. Levan had a novel goal: to create a ‘never-ending song’. The way that he fused songs together, spanning genres as diverse as disco, punk, and Krautrok, has influenced modern artists across the world. His tragic and untimely death due to heart failure meant that he would not live to see his ideas come to fruition in popular music. Cameras were prohibited in the Paradise Garage, but a live record titled Live at Paradise Garage (1979) is a great eye into the legendary atmosphere of the Garage.
