The University of Colorado Boulder’s campus-based student lounge center The Connection is currently undergoing major renovations and is set to reopen in January 2020. Located on the first floor of the University Memorial Center, The Connection is home to the only bowling alley in Boulder and offers pool tables, arcade games and pub eats.
The renovation, which has been ongoing since Aug. 1, is the second update the center has seen since it first opened in 1953.
According to UMC Senior Associate Director Jimmie A. Baker, The Connection’s growth in popularity warranted a “needed upgrade” with more square footage for socializing, programming and hosting private events.
“We wanted to create a cohesive space,” Baker said. “Guests will experience new furniture, upgraded AV and audio systems, ping-pong and foosball, in addition to all the old classic games and events.”
The update will see new bowling equipment, modernized floors and walls as well as upgrades to the Club 156 stage. On certain occasions, The Connection will host comedy events, karaoke and trivia nights. A large variety of food and drinks will still be served.
“With more updated space that fits a variety of needs, we expect to see an increase of attendance by both our students and community,” Baker said.
Some CU students participated in a “renovation steering committee” and met with architects during the design phase to provide their input and ideas for the renovation, which may require materials such as the tiles for the bathroom. UMC board members have also been involved in the project, participating in the steering committee and receiving regular updates.
“I think it’s great that they have decided to update The Connection,” said sophomore Aislinn Katic. “I think the more updated amenities CU has, the more there is for students to enjoy.”
While the center is closed during the fall semester, the UMC has hosted trivia nights, poker tournaments, comedy shows and other events in different locations in the UMC. A calendar of events being put on by The Connection can be found here.
