The University of Colorado Boulder Recreation Center and the Staff Council is kicking off the school year by holding the annual Rocky Mountain Showdown Blood Drive from Tuesday, Aug. 27 through Thursday, Aug. 29.
Students, faculty and community members can go to the Recreation Center ice rink overlook at any time between 9:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. to donate blood. The center said that while scheduling time is preferable, walk-ins are still welcome.
The blood drive is part of a yearly competition between CU Boulder and Colorado State University with the two schools competing to see which can receive the most donations. The winner will be announced during the pre-game program at the Rocky Mountain Showdown on Friday, Aug. 30.
Each CU donor is given two free tickets to the CU football game against Northern Colorado University on September 16.
The Staff Council partners annually with Vitalant, one of the nation’s oldest nonprofit medical transfusions organizations, for the drive. The blood donated through Vitalant becomes available in over a thousand hospitals across the United States.
Since the Boulder campus started holding blood drives in 1973, over 100,000 lives have been positively affected. The Staff Council holds five blood drives throughout the year.
The Staff Council will also be holding another blood drive Nov. 5 to Nov. 7. More information on this week’s drive can be found here.
