The 5-2 University of Colorado Buffaloes ended Saturday night’s win over Arizona State triumphant, but not without a hit to their offense. Colorado’s junior tailback Phillip Lindsay is the Pac-12 Offensive Player of the Week for his efforts in the win, but sophomore wide receiver Jay MacIntyre is reportedly concussed after dropping the ball on a fourth-quarter punt return. He appeared momentarily unconscious after the hit on the play.
Head coach Mike MacIntyre confirmed his son’s injury after the game and further detailed what changes his special teams unit must make to be more effective as the season progresses.
Though MacIntyre fumbled a first-quarter punt return before that fourth-quarter drop, the sophomore had four receptions for 37 yards on the night and averaged 9.3 yards per catch. For the season, he’s had a total of 16 catches for 174 yards, but has yet to score. His best game so far came against Idaho State when he had six receptions for 76 yards.
On the other hand, Lindsay had a record-setting night, rushing 26 times for 219 yards — he’s the first Buff to rush for 200-plus since Chris Brown in 2002 against Missouri—and three touchdowns. He averaged 8.4 yards per carry, and didn’t lose yards on a run. The Aurora, Colorado native has now scored a touchdown in six of Colorado’s seven games so far this season.
Rodney Stewart was the last CU running back to earn the Pac-12 honor back in 2010.
According to Coach MacIntyre, it’s unknown whether Jay MacIntyre will play next Saturday, as the severity of his concussion is not known.
“Jay has a concussion,” MacIntyre said. “He’s going through the whole protocol, and we’ll see how that comes about … depending on the protocol and the next couple of days, there’s a possibility that he’ll play.”
If he is unavailable against Stanford, Coach MacIntyre reported that his backup would be sophomore defensive back Isaiah Oliver.
