There are a lot of tidbits from the men’s and women’s teams at Colorado basketball’s media day — more on all of that later. Men’s coach Tad Boyle broke the biggest news of the day by announcing that sophomore George King would redshirt this season.
“Much like Wesley Gordon’s decision to do it his freshman year, a lot of it has to do with trading a year where he might get 10-15 minutes a game for a fifth year when I expect George to be a starter,” Boyle said.
King, a 6-foot-6, 220 pounds swingman from San Antonio, averaged 1.5 points and 1.5 rebounds in 5.5 minutes a game as a freshman. He shot just 28 percent overall and 20 percent from three.
Boyle announced King’s decision when asked which players had improved most as perimeter shooters.
“He’s probably improved shooting the ball from the perimeter as much as anyone,” Boyle said.
King would have been third in the rotation at small forward behind junior Xavier Johnson and sophomore Tre’Shaun Fletcher.
Besides Johnson, senior Askia Booker, junior Xavier Talton, sophomore Wes Gordon and junior Josh Scott would round out Colorado’s starting five today.
“But it’s fluid,” Boyle said. “We have seven or eight starters. I just have to pick five.”
