The Colorado Buffaloes lacrosse team took on UC Davis and Stanford University this weekend, splitting the series 1-1 after beating the Aggies 14-5 and taking a loss to the No. 8 Cardinals, 13-5. The women are now 6-6 for the season.
Coach Ann Elliot, along with her players, are looking forward to their final five games before the race for the MPSF Championship.
Friday afternoon, the Buffs won their second game in a row in Davis, California. The road win encouraged Coach Elliot and she said it was a huge confidence builder for her young team.
The Buffs also found confidence though an impressive performance by freshman Johnna Fusco, who had a career high of five goals and three assists.
“Johnna’s the type of kid that goes out there and competes every game, in all aspects of the game, and that’s one of the reasons why we really like her,” Coach Elliot said. “She had a great day for us and she plays a huge part in our attack.”
Colorado had a total of 33 shots on goal in the offensive matchup. Freshman Cali Castagnola contributed to the offensive attack with four goals of her own.
The Buffs then traveled to Stanford on Sunday, falling 13-5. Elliot was still happy with her team’s performance, even if it wasn’t reflected on the scoreboard at the end of the game.
“I think it was one of the best games we played defensively, but we gave Stanford too many opportunities and they are a very good team,” Elliot said. “When you give a good team an opportunity, they are going to convert.”
Elliot is keeping a positive attitude for all that lies ahead of this team of mostly freshmen.
“We have five games left, four of them are conference games, and each one of them is a huge game for us,” she said. “So we’ve got to come back ready to compete if we want to be successful.”
Women’s lacrosse plays again Friday, April 11 at home against the USC Trojans.
