Chancellor Philip DiStefano signed the CU Boulder campus No-Smoking policy Wednesday. The policy bans smoking of any substances on university-owned and operated grounds by students, employees, visitors or contractors alike.
The policy takes effect immediately, but will enter a transitional period through Aug. 18, a campus news release stated Wednesday.
The ban does not apply to public sidewalks on the campus perimeter.
Designated outdoor smoking areas will be created around campus and remain until at least December, according to the release. The success of those areas will be evaluated by that time and their use may or may not be extended.
There will be no fines or legal repercussions for smoking, but community-based enforcement can refer students to the Office of Student Conduct.
“Violators may be provided education, offered a referral for smoking cessation and, if a student or employee of University of Colorado Boulder, may be subject to disciplinary action,” the release stated.
