With the Olympics, elections and catchy songs galore, the massive world of memes that exploded this year on the internet is no shock. Here are the top 12 of 2012.
12. Kony
When the Kony video came out, it went viral on Facebook, with similar comments like this accompanying the video. Many of the people who posted this video, just like the girl in this meme, encouraged people to watch it if not they weren’t “heartless,” yet didn’t actually do anything to help stop the war in Uganda.
11. Big Bird
That awkward moment Mitt wants to get rid of PBS, therefore getting rid of Sesame Street…
10. Scumbag Steve
Scumbag Steve encompasses every quality of a scumbag as seen through the memes. He takes your booze, pukes on your stuff and then leaves. What a jerk.
9. Hey Girl
Ryan Gosling memes got big this year with “Hey Girl” on an image of the man himself, putting girls in a frenzy with all his gloriousness. This went a step further after Romney discussed his binder full of women, Gosling came to the rescue to make them weak in the knees.
8. Legbombing
In February at the 84th academy awards, Angelina Jolie’s right leg made a statement as it stretched out of her dress and on the red carpet. Everyone took notice, and the “legbombing” began.
This year Carly Rae Jepsen came out with “Call Me Maybe”, an extremely catchy song you can try and run from, but it will follow you into the dark and so will these coons.
During this year’s summer Olympics in London McKayla Maroney gave a sour face after falling on her knees and receiving a silver medal. This sour face turned into the “McKayla is not impressed” meme. McKayla is not impressed with you Coachella and your Tupac.
The real reason Ariel left the ocean? She became too hip.
Condescending Wonka just does not care and will let you know how he feels, indirectly and sarcastically.
Joffery, one of the least likable characters from “Game of Thrones,” once made a promise to Batman to do something great. So he became king and terrorized everyone.
Overly attached girlfriend portrays all the stereotypes of exactly that. Beware, she’s watching.
1. Ermahgerd
Ermahgerd comes from the mispronunciation of “Oh my God,” most notably if someone has a speech impediment when trying to speak with retainers or braces in your mouth.
