Last week, the CU women’s tennis team concluded their 2012 fall season by competing in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Mountain Region Championships in Las Vegas. The team saw early victories in both singles and doubles play, but ended the tournament in consolation rounds.
Day 1
On Wednesday, the Buffs took to the Fertitta Tennis Complex on the University of Nevada, Las Vegas campus for one round of singles and two rounds of doubles play. In the first round of singles competition, junior Winde Janssens and freshman Julyette Steur each pulled out victories, advancing from 128 players in the first round to the second round of 64. Janssens’ win was the 25th of her collegiate career. Janssens and Steur also played together in the doubles round, taking down a duo from the University of New Mexico, while sophomore Ashley Tiefel and freshman Mazy Watrous defeated a team from Idaho State University.
Day 2
On Thursday, Janssens/Steur and Tiefel/Watrous continued on in doubles play, but both lost in the second round. Janssens and Steur fell to a seventh-seeded team from Brigham Young University, 8-5, while Tiefel and Watrous were defeated by a pair from the University of Wyoming, 9-8.
Day 3
On Friday, Janssens and Steur competed in the singles second and third rounds, but neither moved onto the Sweet 16. In the second round, Janssens pulled out a win against UNLV’s Anett Ferenczi Bako in a three-set match. She went on to lose in the third round, however, against Nevada’s No. 13-seeded Michelle Okhremchuk. In Steur’s second round singles match, she took down the University of Northern Arizona’s Alica Pacaut in three sets. Steur then moved onto the third round but was defeated by Desiree Tran of BYU.
Day 4
The final day of competition for the Buffs was Saturday’s consolation play. In consolation doubles, senior Erin Sanders and junior Carla Manzi Tenorio took down a duo from the University of Northern Colorado. The Sanders/Manzi Tenorio pair finished the fall season with a 4-2 doubles record. In consolation singles, the Buffs earned two wins with Tiefel edging Colorado State University’s Adriana Wojakowska and Manzi Tenorio defeating Amber Stuhlmann of Utah State University. Tiefel and Manzi Tenorio have each earned three singles victories on the season, while Steur leads the Buffs with four.
The ITA Mountain Regional concluded the fall season for CU tennis, but the Buffs will kick off their spring season on Jan. 18 with the Long Beach State Invitational.
