This time it is not due to a decision by coach Dan Hawkins to bench the junior. Instead, it is a decision by the medical staff, which took Hansen to the hospital following Saturday’s loss to Texas Tech. He has been ruled out for the season.
After the game Hawkins told reporters Hansen bruised his ribs and could possibly be able to start next week at Oklahoma. That was before they found out the severity of the injury. Hansen ruptured his spleen and will remain in the hospital for a few days.
The signal-caller got hit midway through the second quarter on an option run and sat out the remainder of the match.
Fifth-year senior Cody Hawkins will now resume starting duties for the Oklahoma game and beyond. This season has been the only one in the younger Hawkins’ career in which he has not started a game. That will change next Saturday as the Buffs get to play the Sooners following a letdown defeat to Missouri.
Hansen attempted to throw at halftime but said he had trouble breathing and felt a sharp pain in his chest.
After the team’s latest loss, Hansen said he is remaining faithful in his group.
“You feel like you’re up against the world a little bit,” he said. “But you just have to stay positive and I think we’ve done a good job of doing that.”

Looks like we’ll finish 3-9. Hawkins still needs to be fired though.
