The Boulder County Coroner’s office identified the victim of Sunday’s officer-involved shooting at the Wimbledon Condominiums in Boulder as Michael Habay, 42.

According to a news release from the coroner’s office, an autopsy has been completed and the cause and manner of death are under investigation.

According to a Boulder Police Department news release, Habay was shot twice by officer Vincent Gallerani at close range with a Heckler and Kock, model 416, .223 caliber rifle at approximately 12:46 p.m. Habay was transported to Boulder Community Hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Earlier in the day, Boulder police officers had responded to a potential domestic situation at the apartment complex involving Habay and girlfriend Kirsten Stenseng, who had a restraining order against Habay. Although they found Stenseng outside, officers could not locate Habay in the morning. They did not have probable cause to enter the apartment, the release said, and left after Stenseng drove away.

Gallerani and several other officers responded to a second call at about 12:30 p.m. from a neighbor who reported that a man was making threatening remarks and stabbing a post with a large knife outside of his apartment at Wimbledon Condominiums.

No one was outside when police arrived at the apartment building, and no one responded at Habay’s door, so four officers forced open the door. Before the police could enter the apartment, Habay began running toward the door with a knife in each of his hands.

Officer Nick Smetzer deflected Habay with a ballistic shield as he ran towards officer Gallerani. Unable to retreat before the suspect was upon him, Gallerani fired at him three times. He immediately fell to the ground while still holding the knives, police said.

Stenseng was later found safe in a nearby apartment with another resident.
