This Friday, CU’s Battle of the Bands will put eight local artists head-to-head for a chance to become the next big thing, in a free show at 7:30 pm in the Glenn Miller Ballroom.
Previous winners of the Battle of the Bands have exploded in popularity following their victories. The 2009 champions Air Dubai have sold out venues in Boulder and Denver and toured the country, and 2010 winners West Water Outlaws have also performed on national tours.
This year, the Battle of the Bands will feature local bands and a variety of genres like hip-hop, indie-pop and folk punk. The eclectic mix of music, plus the opportunity to see various bands before they make it big, should be incentive enough for any music lover to attend.
This year’s lineup includes Drop Switch, Brent Crane & A Band, Brandon Calano, Cold River City, 100 Percent, Petey Purcell, Slanted Jack and Barren Waves.
The band that comes out on top will win five hours of recording time in Coupe’s Studio A, the same room where DeVotchKa, REM, The Wu-Tang Clan and many other extremely popular groups have recorded albums. They will also win four hours of mixing on Coupe’s SSL console, which is the mixer of choice for everyone from Nine Inch Nails to Jack Johnson, and the help of a Coupe award-winning sound engineer to mix their recordings. For bands whose first recordings were created using software like Garage Band, the chance to record in a state-of-the-art studio could be the opportunity of a lifetime.
The prizes aren’t limited to just the bands, though. Program Council will be giving out door prizes from places including Japango, McGuckin’s, Qdoba and swag from the CU Bookstore.
