On Friday afternoon, the Colorado Buffaloes were wrangled by the Oklahoma State Cowgirls.
At CU’s South Campus Courts, Colorado lost the doubles point and five of six singles points against the Cowgirls. The women are now on a nine-game losing streak, the longest such streak since the 1977-1978 season. The Buffs’ record now stands at 3-12 overall and 0-5 in the Big 12.
Oklahoma State started the match strong, as Malika Rose and Kanyapat Narattana defeated CU freshman duo Kristina Schelich and Winde Janssen in the first doubles match.
CU freshman Carla Manzi Tenorio and senior Abbie Probert then defeated OSU’s Nataliya Shatkovskaya and Sasha Belova at the No.2 slot. The Cowgirls responded, though, as C.C. Sardinha and Lela Simmons beat CU freshman Kristina Barber and junior Michala Hedelund Jensen at the No.3 slot to secure the doubles point.
In singles play, though, the Buffs fell apart.
OSU took five of six singles points, winning each of those sets by two or more points. The sole win for the Buffs came from Schelich at the No.1 slot as she defeated OSU’s Shatkovskaya, 6-4, 6-3. The victory is Schleich’s third this season at the No.1 spot.
Colorado played four freshmen during today’s match, and CU head coach Nicole Kenneally said the loss was a good learning experience for them.
“Ultimately, we continue to learn how to compete well and we are looking forward to out next opportunity to test ourselves,” Kenneally said in a news release.
That opportunity will come next weekend as the Buffs head to Kansas to take on the No.31 Kansas State Wildcats on Friday in Manhattan and the Kansas Jayhawks on Sunday in Lawrence.
Colorado then returns home on April 15th to play the No.45 Texas Tech Red Raiders.
