An apartment fire directly east of CU Boulder main campus destroyed two units before dawn on Saturday, Boulder Fire Rescue said.
Kim Kobel, spokeswoman for Boulder fire and police departments, said that at 3:01 a.m. firefighters received a report of a fire at Gold Run Condominiums. When they arrived, firefighters found 2885 Springdale Lane completely engulfed in flames.
Three people from units 2885 and two people from 2887 — all adults — self-evacuated, Kobel said, and Boulder firefighters and police officers evacuated the other six units in the building that was on fire.
Firefighters contained the flames by 4:15 a.m., Kobel said. The fire was extinguished shortly after that. Firefighters were continuing to search for hot spots in the walls of the buildings at 9 a.m.
At one point, Kobel said, the flames reached 40 feet above the apartment roofs.
“They were so high that firefighters at a nearby station could see it,” Kobel said of the fire house at 30th and Arapahoe, about 2,000 feet north.
No residents were injured. One firefighter was taken to a hospital to be treated for a minor injury.

Kobel said that units 2885 and 2887 are uninhabitable and likely total losses.
Residents in the other units will likely be allowed to return to their apartments after Xcel evaluates on Saturday, Kobel said.

Gold Run is located east across 28th Street and 28th Street Frontage Road from Prentup Field. Springdale Lane was closed after 3 a.m. Kobel said police reopened the road around 9 a.m.
The cause of the fire was unknown Saturday morning. Kobel said the city fire marshal was investigating.
