On Sept. 5, police arrested suspect Daniel Stewart Cooper in connection with dozens of burglaries that reportedly took place in the Hill area between April and September of 2012.
After two victims of a residential burglary spotted Cooper walking carrying the victim’s stolen backpack and laptop, they called the police. Police soon found him hiding in some bushes nearby.
After fighting with police, Cooper was arrested. He faces charges of: Obstructing a Police Officer, Resisting a Police Officer and Second Degree Assault of a Police Officer. According to a news release, Cooper is responsible for between 50 to 100 burglaries in the area that roughly borders Broadway to 9th Street, and Euclid north to Grandview.
Cooper allegedly only targeted unlocked residences, and was mainly looking for drugs although he would occasionally steal electronics and other items from homes if they were available. Cooper would help himself to food, alcohol, clean clothing, a shower and various personal toiletries.
According to police, the residents were often home and asleep when Cooper entered. When confronted, Cooper would pretend to know someone in the home, and the victims would allow him to leave peacefully.
Police believe Cooper is also responsible for 34 burglaries in Boulder that have not been reported to the police. Police also suspect Cooper committed Unlawful Sexual Contact of an adult female, and several vehicle thefts.
Cooper now faces the following charges: 23 counts of Second Degree Burglary, 4 counts of Second Degree Assault of a Police Officer, 1 count of Unlawful Sexual Contact, 1 count of Resisting a Police Officer, and 1 count of Obstructing a Police Officer.
Cooper is presently being held in the Boulder County Jail while the Boulder Country District Attorney is processing charges for the vehicle thefts.
