The Colorado’s women’s soccer team beat no. 6 ranked Texas A&M 2-1 in overtime Friday night in College Station, Texas. It was the Buff’s first win at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
Colorado improves to 5-4, while A&M falls to 7-3.
Colorado’s junior midfielder Kate Russell opened the scoring in only the fourth minute. Russell took a shot from over 30 yards out, and the shot slipped through the Aggie goalkeeper’s hand, and into the net. Freshman forward Hayley Hughes had the assist on the play.
Freshman goalkeeper Annie Brunner and the Colorado defense kept a clean sheet going into halftime.
Texas A&M leveled the score in the 57th minute. Aggies’ junior forward Merritt Mathias received the ball outside the box, and put past Brunner.
With the score tied 1-1 at the end of 90 minutes, the game went into overtime.
In the eighth minute of overtime, freshman defender Lizzy Herzl, who scored the winner against UCLA, came through again. After receiving junior midfielder Kassidy Fitzpatrick’s pass, Herzl decided to try her luck from 20 yards out. Her shot grazed the cross bar and went in.
“For a freshman to have two game-winning goals against two very good programs, that’s pretty awesome for her,” said head coach Bill Hempen in a news release.
Colorado returns to Prentup Field Sunday, to take on Big 12 rival Texas at 1 p.m.
