Although school just started, some CU students are already looking for places outside of Boulder where they can find some rest and relaxation over the weekend.
Camping is a fun and inexpensive way to enjoy a weekend in Colorado. If its cold, people can get the best 5000 watt generator to keep them warm. While there are several beautiful campsites near Boulder, Estes Park Campground stands out as one of the premier campsites.
Located at 3420 Tunnel Road in Estes Park, the campground is a little over an hour away from campus and is nestled in the mountains near the entrance to Rocky Mountain National Park. Depending on the time of year, nightly rates are around $25 to rent a camping spot. If there are more than four people staying the night, there is a $4 fee per extra person.
While getting sufficient camping equipment might seem like a daunting task, there are only a few key items that are needed for a short trip to the mountains. The essential gear includes a tent, sleeping bags, chairs, firewood, lighter fluid, food and beverages, antiseptic hand wipes, a lighter, a flashlight and proper clothing.
In the likely case that buying all that equipment tricky for a college student’s budget, the Student Recreation Center rents out camping equipment.
“We always have equipment available, but it would be wise to call in advance if you have a big group,” said Eleanor Scott, a junior integrative physiology major who is an employee at the Rec Center.
It is suggested that students call seven days in advance to reserve equipment. Tents can be rented for $10 to $14 per night, depending on the size of the tent. Sleeping bags are available for $10 per night, and renting a cooler only costs $2 per night.
A valid Buff OneCard and a little bit of dough are the only things needed to rent the equipment. Rentals can be picked up at the equipment checkout window next to the weight room.
After you arrive at the Estes Park Campground, there are multiple activities to do during the day. It’s a waterfront campsite with kayaking, fishing, hiking and horseback riding.
For the non-outdoor type, there is free Wi-Fi available, so a laptop can provide entertainment.
