The University of Colorado and the greater Boulder-Denver area provide a vibrant music scene. While several of the Boulder-based music blogs tend to focus on electronic music and dubstep, one CU student created a blog that could appeal to fans of all genres. Crave the Sound (commonly referred to as Crave) is a CU-affiliated music blog founded by passionate music fan and musician Krista Barry. Barry is a junior public relations major who hopes to secure a job in music industry working directly with recording artists and their management.
Barry founded Crave the Sound in the summer of 2015, and the blog has enjoyed a considerable amount of success, covering artists ranging from Counting Crows to Vince Staples. Crave the Sound prides itself on featuring a diverse array of genres, and the website is divided into several categories, all focusing on different kinds of music, including “Trendy,” “Turn Up,” “Rock Out,” “Trippy Hippy,” “Urban” and another section featuring Colorado-based artists. I chatted with Barry about what inspired her to found Crave the Sound, how students can get involved, and more:
Gavin Daugherty: How did you start Crave?
Krista Barry: Over the summer, I felt there was a lack of a music blog in Boulder that covered all the genres and really focused on cool video and image content. We focus on short articles, interviews and local musicians. I also wanted to create a website that was really easy to navigate. This summer there was the Underground Music Showcase in Denver, with over 300 artists. I reached out to a ton of them for interviews, and could bring my camera to the festival, so that was a great way to jump into it without having to ask for a press pass. We got so much content that way; we covered so many great artists like Zach Heckendorf and Millicent, from Denver. Then we went to Red Rocks and got pictures of Hozier and Alt-J. After that we started getting press passes to pretty much whatever we wanted. I didn’t really expect it to get as far as it has, I didn’t know what to expect. It was really just a place for me to write about music, then it evolved into a lot more than that, and I met so many great people through the blog.
GD: What sets you apart from the other music blogs in Boulder?
KB: We cover all genres of music, whereas a lot of Boulder blogs cover EDM exclusively. We welcome all types of members, whether it’s just writing or just photo — it’s not a huge commitment. You don’t have to write articles weekly, you can write one once a month or once a year, it’s very casual. I just want people to have opportunities to go out and cover shows. It also looks great on your resume.
GD: If people want to get involved, what’s the best way to do so?
KB: Email me! My email is krista@cravethesound.com. Email me or meet me for coffee so we can discuss what you want to do for the blog. We love videographers and photographers, and people who are willing to go out and cover artists. We are looking for people who love music, any genre of music is welcome. Even if you don’t have experience it’s not a problem; I would like for everyone who wants to get involved to be able to do so.
Gavin: And the all-important question, when and where do you meet?
KB: Wednesdays have been good. We will meet around 8:15 on Wednesdays this semester in the UMC. Again, email me if you want to get involved.
Crave the Sound meets on Wednesdays at 8:15 pm in the UMC. To get involved, email Crave founder Krista Barry at krista@cravethesound.com. To check out the blog, visit http://cravethesound.com/ or the official Crave instagram account https://www.instagram.com/crave_the_sound/.
