In another match with a highly-ranked conference foe, the University of Colorado women’s soccer team held on for a 1-1 tie with No.19 Washington after two overtimes Friday afternoon at home on Prentup field.
Senior defender Heather Ward provided the lone goal for Colorado when she headed in a corner kick from sophomore defender Jess Orejel in the 55th minute. The goal was an equalizer for Colorado, as the Buffaloes were playing from behind after an 11th minute strike from Washington’s sophomore forward Kimberly Keever, who gave the Huskies an early 1-0 lead.
But after Ward’s strike the game was a defensive battle for the remaining 35 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. Colorado played strong defense in support of freshman goalkeeper Scout Watson, who made her first start of the season and of her career in place of senior goalkeeper Kate Scheele. Watson settled in after allowing Keever’s early goal, and she made four saves throughout the match, including one in the 88th minute and one in the first overtime period.
Washington’s defense held throughout the end of the game as well, although senior goalkeeper Megan Kufeld got more of a workout between the posts than Watson as she held off the Buffaloes with eight saves in the match.
Three yellow cards were given out in the physical conference match, two for the Buffs and one for the Huskies. Colorado’s bookings included one to Ward in the 71st, and the second to junior forward Brie Hooks in the 90th minute, while Washington’s Domnique Bond-Flasza received the Huskies’ lone yellow card in the 109th minute.
Colorado finishes a weekend of Washington opponents when the Buffaloes host No.21 Washington State this Sunday with kickoff at 1 p.m.
