Men’s hockey:
The men’s hockey team went to Cleveland, Ohio with one goal.
A determined Buffs team rode a 4-0 lead into the third period against Buffalo in their first game at nationals. Colorado almost let it slip away after Buffalo scored three unanswered goals in the third period. Erik Kardash, David Coleman, Jake Bauer and Elliot Polanchyck all tallied one goal, while George Gruber Vii, Kirk Van Arkel, Andrew Bradford, RJ Salvato, and Pierce Maty each recorded an assist in the 4-3 win. Alex Palumbo got the win in goal, saving 24 shots in the game.
Next up came No. 1 Arizona State. Colorado was able to hang around into the third period, only down 2-1. ASU’s offense, led by Eric Rivard, proved to be too much for CU. The Sun Devils put 57 shots on net compared to the Buffs’ 24. Rivard notched four goals and two assists. Kirk Van Arkel’s power play goal (Mick Bruce assist) in the second period was the lone goal on the day for Colorado in a 6-1 loss. Alex Palumbo picked up the loss despite saving 51 shots.
The Buffs end their season with a 17-15-2 record.
Men’s lacrosse:
The men’s lacrosse team escaped snowy Colorado for the weekend in Phoenix, Ariz. No. 1 Colorado was able to squeak by No. 2 ASU behind attackman John Clayton’s seven goals for a 15-14 win. Clayton also added an assist for a total of eight points in the game. He currently leads the team with 19 points and 12 goals on the season. Colin MacIlvennie and Ryan Stoll each added in two goals of their own. Jace Gan led the team with two assists. Freshman Jensen Makarov got the win in goal with a .440 save percentage.
On Saturday, Colorado beat UCSB 10-3. Eight different players scored a goal for CU, with Cary Garfinkel and Doug Graves scoring two each. Garfinkel added two assists to his team leading eight assists on the season. Makarov again picked up the win, stymieing the Gauchos with an .824 save percentage.
No. 1 Colorado (6-0) will play No. 22 Florida State (4-1) at home on Friday, March 13th at 7 p.m.
