Welcome to the first edition of CU Independent’s “Club Sports Report,” which will give a weekly update on the club teams that are competing in black and gold. This week, CUI sports reporter Cannon Casey recaps the month of January for the men’s and women’s club hockey squads.
WOMEN’S ICE HOCKEY:
The Colorado women’s club hockey team enjoyed success this January.
The team went 2-1-1 over the month, outscoring opponents 14-9. The Buffs had to claw out an overtime victory vs. the University of Denver with senior forward Kaye Sitterley scoring the winner, giving the Buffs a 2-1 victory. Junior goalie Sarah Mullen stopped 22 of 23 shots on the day.
Against Midland University, Colorado had no trouble finding the net. With a total of 47 shots on goal, the Buffs won 8-1 behind a hat trick from senior forward Devon Seibt and four assists by junior forward Alex Mohr. In the other games, Colorado lost 3-0 against a tough CO Selects U19AA team and tied the Lady Roughriders U19AA team 4-4.
The team is 7-11-1 on the season and looks to continue the success for their senior night vs. CSU on Friday, Feb. 13th at 7:30 p.m.
MEN’S ICE HOCKEY:
The Colorado men’s club hockey team went 2-3 over the month of January.
The team started off the month with a dominating win at Northern Colorado, 8-2. Six different players scored on the day, including a hat trick by forward Jake Bauer. The Buffs then played Northern Colorado at home with similar results, a 10-3 thrashing. Colorado’s damage in that game came by the hands of right wing Kirk Van Arkel, and forwards Pierce Maty and Matt Anders, all of whom netted two goals in the win.
Coming off of the success in their home state, the Buffaloes went on a three game road trip to Oklahoma and came away with three losses. A 3-1 loss at the University of Oklahoma started off the trip, followed by a pair of losses to Central Oklahoma. They were outscored 13-4 in two losses against Central Oklahoma (5-0 and 5-4).On Saturday, Colorado got back on track vs. Colorado State with a 4-3 win at home.
The men’s team is now 11-12-2 on the season, with their next game scheduled vs. Arizona on Thursday, Feb. 5th at 7:30 p.m.
