When TOBACCO took the stage at the Larimer Lounge last Friday, their distinct warped electronica sound had a few new notes to it.
TOBACCO is the stage name of Tom Fec, who some might recognize for his work as the front man of Black Moth Super Rainbow. Fec was joined by BMSR bandmate Maureen Boyle, a.k.a. “The Seven Fields of Aphelion.”
The current tour aligns with the May release of TOBACCO’s fourth full-length studio album, “Ultima II Massage.” Although the album marks a departure from record label Anticon onto Ghostly, it still contains the familiar TOBACCO sound.
That sound was in full effect Friday, with the duo sampling from TOBACCO’s lengthy discography.
“Ultima II Massage” received a fair portion of the rotation, but they also played some fan favorites of albums such as “Fucked Up Friends.” Concert-goers heard the familiar psychedelic electro-pop, as well as some newer tracks that suggested a foray into more industrial electronic music.
The show began with a clip from “The Jerry Springer Show” projected behind Fec and Boyle, featuring one of the more comical guests: a man reading a note, very politely addressing the mother of his child and ex-best friend.
TOBACCO opened with “Streaker,” the first track on the new album. The opener was accompanied by the music video, which featured a massage parlor where everyone was possessed by some sort of demonic being. Eric Wareheim, of “Tim and Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!” directed the clip.
The rather short show kept heads enthusiastically bobbing the whole time. Once the initial set was over, the duo quickly re-emerged for a short encore. After the performance, eager fans were waiting with pens in hand to have their vinyl, which some brought from home, signed by Fec and Boyle.
