Since the 2004 release of their debut album “The Man in a Blue Turban With a Face,” the Philadelphia-based experimental band Man Man has become known for their intrepidly authentic, way-out music involving a collection of unexpected instruments, including clavinet, pots and pans and fireworks.
The band’s popularity has grown rapidly. They have evolved from opening for bands like Modest Mouse to performing at a variety of festivals, including Coachella, and onto the current tour for their recently released fifth album, “On Oni Pond.”
Their tour will bring them to Boulder, to the Fox Theater, where they will take the stage on Feb. 17. Xenia Rubinos joins them as the opening act, contributing her equally distinctive sound.
Man Man’s fifth full-length album was released in September and re-created the band’s sound. Lead singer Honus Honus (Ryan Kattner) and drummer Pow Pow (Christopher Powell) collaborated in finding new ways to intrigue listeners with a completely new take. This upbeat and energy-packed album hones in on Man Man’s inventive, albeit odd songs, highlighted by such hits as “Pink Wonton,” which exhibits Honus Honus’ creative and emotional lyrics.
Doors open at 8:30 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 17, at Fox Theater. Ticket prices start at $18.
