We all love the classics, but it’s time for a new set of favorites. Our generation, full of young up-and-coming artists, promises some substantial talent. Here are some of the best young music makers providing a fresh take that’s well-worth jamming to.
1. “Disconsolate” – Ameer Vann
Artist Ameer Vann, 18, describes his music as “meticulous and cold,” but don’t let that scare you. The Houston-based artist has continued to draw listeners with innovative music since he released a self-titled EP in 2013. Vann is a part of the collective AliveSinceForever, and you can find more of his work on SoundCloud or at alivesinceforever.com.
2. “Find My Way Home” – The Boondiggas
This Colorado-based jam band is made up of 20-somethings Mason Greene (vocals, sax, guitar), George Lowery (drums), James Lowery (keys, guitar, sax), Jonny Gutierrez (guitar) and Bradley Zimmerman (bass). Its fresh sound includes a little bit of every genre, from reggae to jazz, and creates an authentic listening experience that’s sure to leave you feeling funky.
3. “Coping Mechanism” – Topaz Jones
Rapper Topaz Jones is a rising artist from Montclair, N.J. A part of Tastemakers NJ, a brand that highlights trends in clothing, art and media, Jones brings an original mix of hip-hop and rap with his impressive flows. 4. “Hold On, We’re Going Home” – Tara Olayeye
Tara Olayeye, 19, has a soothing and soulful voice that is reminiscent of a young Norah Jones. Olayeye is seen here doing a cover of Drake’s “Hold On, We’re Going Home,” but you can check out her single “And We’re Singing…” on iTunes.
5. “PJs – Kevin Abstract”
Kevin Abstract, the leader of collective AliveSinceForever, provides a unique hip-hop-rap blend in his self-titled EP, which was released in September 2013. This EP displays Abstract’s versatile talent. You can check out his website, or listen to more at alivesinceforever.com.
