The University of Colorado women’s basketball team remains undefeated after a win over the University of New Mexico, 85-53.
Junior forward Jen Reese led the Buffs with 18 points, seven rebounds and a pair of blocks and assists. She was closely followed by four more Buffs who scored in double digits, including Lexy Kresl (13), Lauren Huggins (12), Jasmine Sborov (11) and Jamee Swan (10).
CU shot 55.6 percent from both the two-point and three-point ranges, complemented by 75 percent shooting from the free throw line.
The Lobos were held to 38.9 percent shooting from the field and 20 percent shooting from the three-point range. Their 56.3 percent shooting from the foul line was what kept them alive through the game.
Saturday was off to a quick start with a two-point jumper from Lobo Antiesha Brown 20 seconds in. They went up by one more basket before Reese put the Buffs on board with a three-point jumper a minute later.
The Lobos held a slight lead over the Buffs for the next two and a half minutes, until junior guard Jasmine Sborov tied it up for CU with a three-point jumper with 16:12 left on the clock (9-9).
Then the Buffs took over. For the remainder of the half, the Buffs outscored the Lobos 30 to 17 after making at least 50 percent of their shots from everywhere on the court, and led 42-28 going into the half.
The Buffs were hitting threes throughouthe entire first half, making 66.7 percent of their shots from behind the arc (8 for 12). They kept raining on the Lobos’ parade by shooting 57.7 percent from the field, making 15 of 26 buckets.
The second half started much like the first, with the Lobos snagging the first couple of points off a few free throws from Halasz (42-30). But 12 was as close as the Lobos would get to the Buffs for the rest of the game.
With 6:28 left on the clock, the Lobos got within 18 points (69-51) before the Buffs went off on a 14-0 run leading into the final minute of the game. Each team managed to get off one more basket before the final buzzer sounded, bringing the score to an 85-53 final.
The Buffs return to their home floor next Friday, Nov. 29 to take on the University of South Alabama in the Omni Hotels Classic. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
