The Shook Twins make a run for Boulder this Sunday when they’ll host an evening of folk fusion at Shine Restaurant & Gathering Place.
The show is 21 and over, starts at 9:00 p.m. and is $10 at the door. Also performing are Ghost Dream and local musicians Jeromy Smith and Sam Rae Sidwell.
The Shook Twins quartet, consisting of identical sisters Katelyn and Laurie Shook, Kyle Volkman and Niko Daoussis, sprung from Portland’s folk scene in 2009. The twins have been collaborating on stage, building their skills and focusing their energy on creating new music, since 2006.
“We made up a genre for ourselves; we call it ‘quirky folk,’ which is folk with a twist,” Laurie Shook said.
The sisters employ an arsenal of musical instruments in their braided harmonies and upbeat folk music. They blend ukulele, djembe, mandolin, glockenspiel and face drum (beatbox) in and out of their banjo-and-guitar combo sets, utilizing their talented diversity.
Still, the heart and soul of the Shook Twins resides in their ability to weave and thread their vocals.
“We’ve been singing together since we could sing,” Katelyn Shook said. “Making up songs in the car, singing Sinéad O’Connor in the backyard, then 9 years of choir. We have the same throat DNA, so it works out well.”
The Shook Twins have been looking forward to their Colorado dates and are eager to shine their magic on stage.
“We’ve been coming out to Colorado about once a year for the last five or six years,” Shook said. “This will be our first time playing Shine, and we hear that it’s owned by Triplets, so we have a feeling we’ll be treated very well and have a great time.”
