On Thursday morning, University of Cincinnati head coach Butch Jones official declined Colorado’s offer to become the new coach of its football program.
Jones had toured campus and visited with the CU Athletics Department on Monday. He was reportedly offered a five-year, $13.5 million deal from Colorado to take over head coaching duties. Jones’ final decision was expected on Tuesday evening, but he delayed the announcement for several days as he debated his choice.
The Denver Post reported yesterday that Jones had verbally accepted CU’s offer and was nearly set to make his official announcement. Shortly after the story was published, the University of Colorado sent out an email with the following statement from Assistant Athletic Director David Plati to quell any rumors:
“We are still in the active process of hiring our next football coach,” the email stated. “We have nothing to confirm at this time, and no deal with anyone has been reached.”
Jones was CU’s first choice to replace former coach Jon Embree, who was released from the position after leading the team to a 4-21 overall record in his two seasons.
As head coach of the Bearcats, Jones has gone 50-27 over three seasons. He will coach his team in the Belk Bowl against Duke University on Dec. 27.
CU Athletic Director Mike Bohn will have to continue his search for a coach ready and willing to take over a team that just finished one of its worst seasons in school history.
