The CU Men’s Golf team dominated in the 44th annual Gene Miranda Air Force Falcon Invitational in Colorado Springs, winning by 12 strokes and placing two of the top three individuals in the tournament. This is the sixth time the Buffs have won this tournament.
Colorado was the only team to shoot under par for the tournament, and Coastal Carolina and University of Nevada Las Vegas tied for second with an even par score of 864.
Jason Burstyn won the individual aspect of the tournament with a final score of 207, four strokes above second place Tanner Higham of Utah State. Derek Fribbs came in third with a final score of 211, only one stroke behind second place.
Burstyn has now won two events in a row for the Buffs and has tied the CU record by shooting under par in all five of his rounds to start the season. He had 11 birdies, two eagles and only six bogeys this weekend in Colorado Springs.
Fribbs had a team best 17 birdies to help the Buffs take home the team trophy. Neither he nor Burstyn scored worse than a bogey in any of the three rounds.
Freshman Philip Juel-Berg tied for 14th with a 1 over 217. Juel-Berg started strong but had a tough final round to drop him back four strokes.
Redshirt freshmen Tyler Engel tied for 31st in his first major college tournament. He opened the final round with a bogey and a double but settled down over the final 16 holes.
In two weeks the Buffs will compete in the third annual CU-Mark Simpson Invitational hosted by The University of Colorado at Colorado National Golf Club. The Buffs are the defending champions of the tournament.
