While many CU students weren’t thinking of anything related to the university over spring break, the Buffaloes were busy competing.
Women’s golf wins 2012 Anuenue Spring Break Challenge
The No. 11 Colorado women’s golf team made program history over the break, winning back-to-back events for the first time.
In Maui, Hawaii, the Buffs beat out No. 15 University of California by two strokes to give the team its third victory of the season.
Led by sophomore Jenny Coleman, who finished third overall at the tournament, the Buffs ended their regular season on a high note.
The Buffs begin the post-season with the Pac-12 Championships from April 27 to 29 and then host the NCAA West Regional May 10 to 12.
“This is why we put in all the hard work,” CU head coach Anne Kelly said to the Sports Information Department. “Both types of wins are great experiences for this team, to have to fight for it is just another good experience.”
Women’s basketball loses in WNIT quarterfinals at Oklahoma State, 78-70
The Colorado women’s basketball team’s season came to close over the break, with Oklahoma State University ending its run in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament.
Even with the Buffs shooting 15-of-32 from beyond the arc, the Cowgirls were too much for them to handle, completely dominating the inside game, outscoring the Buffs 44 to 14 in the paint.
“I loved our effort and fight today,” CU head coach Linda Lappe said to the SID. “Offensively, we haven’t scored 70 points in a long time. The problem was defensively we couldn’t stop them in the paint or off the drive.”
Senior Julie Seabrook led the Buffs with 16 points in her last game as a Colorado Buffalo.
“I am so proud of our effort,” Seabrook told the SID. “It was really physical in there and we stepped up to the challenge. We let some offensive rebounds go in the first half, but we responded in the second half. We got it going on offense, stepped up and made plays.”
Men’s golf finishes seventh at Oregon Duck Invitational and ninth at U.S. Intercollegiate
Colorado’s men’s golf team couldn’t emerge from the middle of the pack in both tournaments that they played in over spring break.
Senior Kevin Kring earned top-20 finishes in both competitions.
The Buffs are now preparing for the Wyoming Cowboy Classic in Scottsdale, Ariz., on April 9-10.
“We’re pleased with our progress,” CU head coach Roy Edwards said to the SID. “It’s a little slower than we wanted it, but we’re in position where if we play well in our last two events, we’ll be in the postseason. The guys are really improving and I couldn’t be happier with their effort.”
Sophomore Jason DeWitt and Freshman Eileen Gehring lead track and field at the Jim Click Combined Events and Fum McGraw Quadrangular
The track and field team traveled to Tucson, Ariz. earlier this break for the Jim Click events and finished with strong performances by sophomore Jason DeWitt, who finished seventh in the decathalon.
At the Fum McGraw Quadrangular event in Fort Collins, freshman Eileen Gehring won both the 200 and 400 meter dashes. Her 24.39 second 200 was the fastest time in the program since 2001.
The track and field team will be back in action April 6-7 at the Stanford Invitational and April 7 at the Air Force Invitational.
Women’s tennis struggles against No. 3 USC and No. 44 Washington State
The CU women’s tennis team only won one point in both of their matches.
Their 6-1 loss to Washington State University was the 20th straight regular season conference loss, a streak that dates back to 2010.
The Buffs are wrapping up their season on a record-long six game road trip. Their next game is against No. 48 University of Washington on Friday, April 6.
