Welcome to the first edition of the CUI sports mailbag. Every week, we’ll be answering your questions about CU sports to the best of our little Buffalo abilities. This week we tackle questions about CU basketball, cross country, and football and delve into the Tebow-Manning controversy.
Should Andre Roberson go to the NBA draft this year?
No. Roberson is still young and needs to work on a few areas of his game. He needs to be more skilled offensively and diversify his shots. He’s getting better from the outside, but still needs to take it to another level. He needs to build up his upper-body strength by hitting the weight room, so he can compete with other forwards in the NBA. He has already made it clear that he is going to stay at CU next season, and he will bring necessary leadership to the young team.
What do you think about Nebraska reaching out to Tad Boyle?
Our feelings about Nebraska haven’t really changed since we both joined different conferences. It’s good that our head basketball coach is on the level that other schools are taking note. If Taddy ever decided to leave us, which he doesn’t seem to be doing any time soon, he would leave for a higher caliber team, not Nebraska.
Will cross country be back-to-back Pac-12 champions?
They came out hot in their inaugural year, and can possibly take that momentum into another dominant season. Strong seniors like Emma Coburn, Richard Medina and Andy Wacker won’t be with the Buffs next year, but incoming sophomores Ammar Moussa and Rachel Baptista will have a year’s experience under their belts and can greatly contribute.
Will the football team make it to a bowl game?
While we’re optimistic about the Buffs’ future, that optimism entails just doing better than last year. The first three games of the season are winnable with games against Colorado State University, Sacramento State University and Fresno State University. However, that’s how we felt about a lot of our games last season. We have nine conference games, with University of Southern California, University of Oregon and Stanford University all in a row. In order to have a winning record, we need to have better performances against top caliber teams and get “easy” wins against some of the weaker teams in the Pac-12.
Will Manning mania be as big as Tebow mania?
No. Tim Tebow had the ability to make people who generally hate the Broncos (or football) actually jump on the bandwagon. He brought the Mile High Magic back to Denver. While many Broncos fans are really excited for the next season, Manning doesn’t bring the same excitement to the game. Choosing Manning was a risk, but so was keeping Tebow. However, Colorado fans can be fickle and if Manning doesn’t have an amazing season, the Broncos front office will face extreme backlash. Manning is still feeble, so only time can tell what next season will be like.
