The Buffs are in a new season, ignited by a team of veterans and fresh newcomers. CU topped Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on the road, 71-58, to reach 2-0 for the season.
Junior Chucky Jeffery tallied a team-high 19 points, including 16 in the second half. The tenacious guard also nabbed a career-high 16 rebounds. It marks Jeffery’s 12th career double-double.
“We went in at the half and said we need to take care of business on the boards, they were getting a lot of offensive rebounds. Coach Lappe told me to rebound, so that’s what I did,” Jeffery said.
The Buffs out-rebounded the Islanders, 53-48, depending on their underclassmen for huge contributions.
Sharpshooting freshman Lexy Kresl scored 11 points and grabbed five rebounds in 32 minutes. Sophomore Brittany Wilson, who scored 22 in the season-opener against Northern Arizona, dropped another 10 against the Islanders. Her twin sister Ashley scored four.
Four of the five leading scorers from last year return to the Buffs. The team finished 18-16 last season after making the WNIT quarterfinals. Those returnees totaled 40 points at this game.
CU hasn’t lost a road game since February at Iowa State.
“It takes a lot of toughness and team chemistry to win on the road. You don’t do it by having everybody on their own page,” Lappe said.
