Andrew Hutchinson saunters up to the library steps on a chilly October morning as if he was a model on his way to a photo shoot. His effortless cool could be better described as having a James Dean quality.
Hutchinson sports nothing out of the ordinary. His brown leather jacket, fitted black crew neck T-shirt and jeans don’t seem like components of an original ensemble, but when he wears them, you can’t help but admire.
He says his secrets are confidence and the best quality materials he can buy in his price range. When doing his routine shopping around Boulder, Hutchinson frequents shops like Urban Outfitters or American Apparel. Although those are his regular stops, Hutchinson said he lusts after pieces by Diesel and Guess.
After just a few minutes of speaking with Hutchinson, it was obvious that when it comes to style, he has clear likes and dislikes.
When asked what was one of the worst outfits he has seen on campus, he said, “I hate the sorority shirts combined with leggings…Oh, and those bags everyone carries. You know, the ones with the leather handle and the nylon body?”
I knew instantly which bag he was referring to, but the name escaped me. No problem, Hutchinson simply texts a good friend that he always hounds for owning one. After about two seconds, the mystery is solved; it’s the tote by Longchamp.
Hutchinson said an important aspect of style can be boiled down to one word: “individuality.” Considering this, his dislike of the popular bag and legging style suddenly fits into place.
So, what does Hutchinson plan on wearing this winter season?
“I really want to wear something with fur, but I don’t own any,” Hutchinson said. “I love pea coats, but I want an updated version. An ‘end-of-the-world’ pea coat; a pea coat no one has ever dreamed up.”
Sounds like just the jacket many trendsetters are looking for – if only it existed.
