After GQ voted Boulder the 40th worst-dressed city in America, CUI decided to take to the streets in search of higher standards. Our criteria are: no clothing by North Face or Patagonia and no fanny packs (all fashion crimes that Boulderites commit, according to GQ). Check in with us weekly for style icons found on our own campus.
Name: Maya Butler
Age: 20
Major: Communication
Hometown: Laguna Beach, California
Favorite getting ready song: “You Make My Dreams Come True” by Hall & Oates
Hailing from a city by the beach, where wearing a bikini year-round is common, Maya Butler said style says a lot about a person.
“I would say I have mostly a girly style, while still trying to be edgy and pretending I’m a bad-ass,” Butler said.
Butler sees her style as a relaxed boho look with a funky flare. She finds inspiration from the Olsen twins, who she said she follows as a guilty pleasure.
Butler said she doesn’t find her inspiration on the runways.
“I am not much of a designer girl,” she said. ”I pretty much just go with what I like and what fits well.”
Walking the tight rope between her native-beachy vibe, and her edgy rocker attire, Butler finds a nice way to blend the two together. As fun as it may be to get dressed up for a Friday night on the Hill, Butler knows it is important to have a go-to outfit for classes as well.
“I usually wear a casual T-shirt and jeans with my combat boots and a ton of bracelets,” Butler said.
In the featured pictures, Butler wears her favorite black combat boots and her accessories in both pictures, showing it is not too difficult to make two outfits with a limited wardrobe. She models one day and one night look.
When searching for key pieces and accessories to compliment her style, Butler says she shops at places like Nordstrom Rack and Urban Outfitters.
“I also find cute things at the smaller boutiques back at home,” Butler said. Her seemingly effortless style and clothing intuition make Butler a fashion trendsetter to watch out for on campus.
