For her chart-topping performance at the 2011 Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational, CU women’s golfer Alex Stewart is this week’s CU Independent Athlete of the Week.
The Buffs took first place in the Pac-12-dominated tournament that concluded Wednesday, Oct. 5. Stewart finished 4th individually.
The sophomore from Elk Grove, Calif., is only the 17th player in program history to have a top-5 finish.
In a news release, teammate Emily Talley quoted assistant coach Brent Franklin, saying, “She’s tough as nails. She’s so calm, cool and collected.”
Stewart’s composure helped lead the Buffs to victory.
Despite bogeying three consecutive times on the front nine, she shot the final 12 holes at 2-under par. She hit a birdie on the 17th hole to help the Buffs pick up a stroke.
She shot an even par 72 in the final round to finish 1-over par 217. Her 4th place finish was just three strokes behind the tournament winner.
Stewart played her freshman season for the NCAA runner-up Boilermakers. According to her CU Buffs’ biography, she transferred from Purdue to Colorado for the academics, the coaching staff and the teammates.
Stewart and the Buffs return to the green for the Mercedes-Benz SEC/Pac-12 Challenge from Oct. 21-23 in Knoxville, Tenn.
