A new revolution has begun in Boulder. It is a revolution I like to call the Fro-Yo Frenzy. Made famous by Pinkberry, health-conscious frozen yogurt is different from the ice cream we all grew up eating.
One major difference between a typical ice cream shop and a frozen yogurt shop is that there aren’t workers scooping and serving you when you get fro-yo. Now, you are the master of your own creation. You pull the lever, you choose your toppings and you choose how much or how little you want. It is just as much fun to create as it is to eat it.
To satisfy your new craving, you can drive all the way to Denver for some Pinkberry, or you can try one of the many new places that have opened around town.
Being an avid frozen yogurt lover, I have tried all of these shops. On 14th Street is SMOOCH Frozen Yogurt and Mochi. Down the street from SMOOCH on Pearl Street is Maiberry. On Arapahoe, Spooners Frozen Yogurt is a new addition to 29th Street Mall and in the King Soopers Shopping Center you’ll find Ripple. If you want to venture south, Aspen Leaf Yogurt is in the Table Mesa Shopping Center on South Broadway.
Having tested each and every one of these spots I have to give my one vote to Ripple Frozen Yogurt. Ripple’s frozen yogurt is made naturally and locally. It is low in fat and calories while at the same time high in protein, calcium, and other healthy probiotics.
Walking through Ripple’s front door, you are welcomed in by bright blue walls and florescent green lights. There have a section hosting their 16 unique flavors. In addition to their large selection of flavors, Ripple has an even bigger selection of toppings on tap. They have traditional toppings like granola, candy, and freshly cut fruit, but one thing that puts Ripple at number one in my book is their baked goods section. They offer freshly baked cookies, brownies and chocolate chip banana bread to top off your creation.
Lindsay Ostacher, a senior sociology major explains why she loves Ripple so much.
“Not only do I love having the freedom to create my own combinations, but they have homemade puppy chow,” Ostacher said. “Puppy chow as a topping is one of the best things I have ever seen and tasted!”
Another addition will be joining Boulder’s frozen yogurt family. Red Mango is soon to open on the hill. With all these frozen yogurt shops around town, Boulderites will have no problem satisfying their sweet tooth.
