As summer ends, it’s time to say goodbye to outdoor festivals and concerts. Before the long farewell begins, fans will welcome long-time jam band Phish to the Mile-High City.
The aptly named “Summer 2011 Tour” kicked off Memorial Day weekend with locations nationwide. The tour will come to a close at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City from September 2-4.
With over 20 years of hit singles and memorable concerts, Phish is finally on tour again. The group started in 1983 at the University of Vermont. After a two year hiatus, their break up in 2004 and the pursuit of solo careers, Phish reunited in 2009 to deliver old classics and create new work. Founding members Trey Anastasio, Mike Gordon and Jon Fishman will be at the show, along with Page McConnell who joined in 1985.
Phish is frequently compared to the Grateful Dead in musical style and the members’ laid back approach to the music industry. They are known for mixing jazz, bluegrass, folk, blues genres and constantly changing set lists with each show. The band is famous for such songs as “Down with Disease,” “Montana” and “Tweezer,” among many others.
Phish has created 15 tracks from past live Colorado performances free to download from their website. Though this may be considered a nice gesture, it is also a good way for die-hard fans to connect with the group they love, and for new fans to expand their knowledge.
From their distinct style to their diverse fan-base, there are sure to be a variety of expectations for the show. Old fans will surely expect the spontaneity of the band and their unusual genre choices. With dynamic performances, this band’s goal is to make sure that no two shows are alike.
