After visiting Boulder on Monday, University of Texas quarterback Connor Wood is deciding to transfer to CU.
And his timing could not be better for Buffs coaches, who will see senior Tyler Hansen graduate following the season’s end, creating a giant hole on their depth chart. As Hansen is the only quarterback on roster to ever take a snap for CU in a regular-season game, the competition in 2012 promises to be wide open.
Now coaches can add in to the equation a 6’4″ former high school All-American with a strong arm and quick feet.
When Wood found out he was third-string on the Longhorns’ depth chart he figured his time in Austin to be over. Currently a redshirt freshman, Wood will have three years to play in Boulder.
“I loved playing for UT and gave it my all, but I felt I needed to seek a new opportunity,” Wood said in a statement released by the University of Texas. “I will always cherish the memories and friends I developed as a Longhorn, but I’m excited about the next chapter in my life and looking forward to playing at the University of Colorado.”
Next offseason he will battle among fellow redshirt freshman Nick Hirschman, junior Brent Burnette, and freshman Stevie Joe Dorman for the starting job. Burnette is the only of the four who has played in an FBS game, and he did that while at Middle Tennesse State.
But it is Wood who, unlike the others, came out of high school with towering accolades and expectations of stardom. Coaches from Alabama, Notre Dame, and Oklahoma were knocking on his door to land him.
Now the Houston native winds up at CU in search of another shot to reach the top of that roster.
