Whether the concept of free actually exists, Program Council says it is trying to make that idea a reality for CU students. The student-run organization’s mission is to “provide affordable, high quality, face-rocking entertainment for the Boulder campus community,” according to their website.
Program Council has been providing musical and film entertainment for the CU campus since 1953. They have brought bands such as the Rolling Stones, Dave Matthew’s Band, Pearl Jam and many more. Program Council has several events to help students get excited about the upcoming school year.
The next musical act hosted by Program Council will be the “Cooler Than Me” singer Mike Posner. The free show will be held at the Mary Rippon Theater on Sept. 10. The next show will be a free homecoming show that will feature an unnamed electronic act, scheduled for Oct. 20.
The Council hosts a weekly show mostly consisting of rock and hip hop acts in Club 156, located in the Connection of the UMC.
For students who find film more appealing, the Council has a Friday Night Film series held in CHEM 140 at 9 p.m. Many of the films shown are yet to be released to the public and are free of charge with a Buff OneCard. The featured film of this month, “Catfish,” a Facebook documentary, will be screened in CHEM 140 on Monday, Sept. 13.
Program Council strives to bring entertainment to the CU campus because of the passion and dedication of its student employees. Program Council Director Justin Greenstein, a 21-year-old senior technology major, said he finds music to be a great release and would like to spread his enthusiasm for music on to other students.
“Having a chance to work with other students and bring joy to the CU community is a great satisfaction and is one of the reasons I got involved with Program Council,” Greenstein said.
A great way to become more involved with Program Council is to join the organization’s street team. Film Series Director Kelsey Brown said students on the street team have first access to events and advancement to paid positions within the program.
